ประเพณีไทยแต่โบราณ เมื่อจะมีการสร้างเมืองใหม่ขึ้น ณ ที่ใดก็ตามสิ่งที่จะต้องทำเป็นประการแรกก็คือการหาฤกษ์ยามดี สำหรับฝังเสาหลักเมือง แล้วหลังจากนั้นจึงจะดำเนินการสร้างบ้านสร้างเมืองกันต่อไป เสาหลักเมือง ที่ได้รับการฝังไว้เป็นปฐมนั้น ไม่ว่าที่เมืองไหน ๆ ก็ตาม เมื่อสร้างเมืองเสร็จแล้วก็มักจะเป็นที่เคารพบูชาของชาวเมืองนั้น ๆ ตลอดไป
รวมทั้งชาวเมืองอื่น ๆ ที่พากันเดินทางมายังเมืองนั้น ๆ ก็มักจะต้องแวะไหว้เสาหลักเมือง หรือ เจ้าพ่อหลักเมืองกันจนถือเป็นประเพณี เจ้าพ่อหลักเมืองในหลาย ๆ จังหวัดของไทย ก็มีเรื่องราวเล่าลือถึงอภินิหารความศักดิ์สิทธิ์กันมากมาย ทำให้เป็นที่เคารพบูชาของผู้คน เสาหลักเมืองเป็นประเพณีโบราณที่จำเป็นจะต้องตั้งเสาหลักเมืองก่อนจะมีการลงมือสร้างเมืองใหม่
เสาหลักเมือง กรุงเทพฯ
เสาหลักเมืองนั้นส่วนใหญ่จะสร้างด้วย ไม้มงคล เช่น ไม้ชัยพฤษ์ ไม้ราชพฤษ์เสาหลักเมืองหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจคือ “เสาหลักเมืองของกรุงเทพฯ” เนื่องจากเป็นแห่งเดียวที่มีเสาหลักเมือง 2 ต้น และวางอยู่ใกล้กัน เสาหลักเมืองต้นแรกสร้างขึ้น ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 1 โดยทำพิธียกเสาหลักเมือง เมื่อวันที่ 21 เมษายน พ.ศ.2324 โดยใช้ไม้ชัยพฤกษ์ ลงรักปิดทอง ส่วนยอดนั้นเป็นรูปบัวตูม ภายในเป็นช่องสำหรับบรรจุดวงชะตาเมือง
ฝังเสาหลักเมืองเมื่อครั้งรัชกาลที่ 1 นั้น ได้เกิดอวมงคลนิมิตขึ้น คือเมื่อถึงมหาพิชัยฤกษ์อัญเชิญเสาลงสู่หลุม ปรากฏว่ามีงูเล็ก 4 ตัวเลื้อยลงหลุมในขณะเคลื่อนเสา จึงจำเป็นต้องปล่อยเลยตามเลย โดยปล่อยเสาลงหลุมและกลบงูทั้ง 4 ตัวตายอยู่ภายในก้นหลุม เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกทรงทำนายชะตาเมืองว่า
จะอยู่ในเกณฑ์ร้ายนับจากวันยกเสาหลักเมืองเป็นเวลา 7 ปี 7 เดือน จึงสิ้นพระเคราะห์ ทั้งยังทรงทำนายว่า จักดำรงวงศ์กษัตริย์สืบไปเป็นเวลา 150 ปี ชะตาแผ่นดินที่ร้ายถึงเจ็ดปีเศษนั้น เป็นช่วงที่ไทยติดพันศึกพม่าจนถึงศึกเก้าทัพ ซึ่งสิ้นสุดการพันตูหลังครบห้วงเวลาดังกล่าว ส่วนคำทำนายว่าจักดำรงวงศ์กษัตริย์สืบไป 150 ปีนั้น ไปครบเอาปี พ.ศ. 2475 ซึ่งเป็นปีที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองพอดี
กรณี คำทำนายการดำรงวงศ์กษัตริย์เป็นเวลา 150 ปี ไม่เป็นไปตามคำทำนาย เพียงเปลี่ยนจากระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์มาเป็นระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหา กษัตริย์ทรงเป็นพระประมุข กรณีนี้โหราจารย์ให้ความเห็นว่า คงเนื่องด้วยพระบารมีของรัชกาลที่ 4 ที่ทรงแก้อาถรรพณ์ถอนเสาหลักเมืองและวางดวงชะตาพระนครขึ้นใหม่
ต่อมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 พระองค์ทรง ตรวจดวงพระชะตาและพบว่า เป็นอริกับลัคนาดวงเมือง ประกอบกับเสาหลักเมืองต้นเดิมชำรุดทรุดโทรม จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้าง เสาหลักเมืองขึ้นใหม่ โดยมีแกนเป็นไม้สัก และประกับนอกด้วยไม้ชัยพฤกษ์ ส่วนยอดเป็นทรงมัณฑ์ และทำพิธีในวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2395 พร้อมกันนั้นได้บูรณะ “ศาลหลักเมือง” ขึ้นมาใหม่ นับตั้งแต่นั้นมา เสาหลักเมืองของกรุงเทพฯ จึงมี 2 ต้น โดยต้นเดิมจะสูงกว่าต้นใหม่
ด้วยเหตุนี้ เสาหลักเมืองที่ประดิษฐาน ณ ศาลพระหลักเมืองจึงมีสองต้น เสาเดิมครั้งรัชกาลที่ 1 คือต้นสูง ที่ได้ทำพิธีถอนเสาแล้ว แต่หาที่เก็บที่เหมาะสมไม่ได้ จึงคงไว้ แกนในเป็นเสาไม้ชัยพฤกษ์ มีไม้จันทน์ประดับนอก ลงรักปิดทอง หัวเสาเป็นทรงบัวตูม ภายในกลวงสำหรับบรรจุชะตาพระนคร ดวงนี้อยู่ใจกลางยันต์สุริยาทรงกลด จารึกในแผ่นทอง เงิน นาก
