เหรียญหนวด หรือ เหรียญช้างสามเศียร เหรียญรัชกาลที่5 หันข้าง ไว้หนวด หลังช้างสามเศียร มูลค่า1บาท ที่ระลึกงานพระ พระบรมศพ รศ.129 เป็น 1 ในเหรียญที่ได้รับความนิยมเป็นอย่างมาก เนื่องด้วยพระมหากรุณาธิคุณ ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 จึงทำให้เหรียญนี้ได้รับความนิยมตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน



เหรียญช้างสามเศียรรุ่นแรกของไทย

           พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงสั่งทำเหรียญกษาปณ์ทองขาว (เนื้อนิเกิ้ล) เข้ามาใช้ในสยาม มีสี่ชนิดราคา ได้แก่ ๑.ชนิด ๒ ๑/๒ สตางค์ ๒.ชนิด ๕ สตางค์ ๓.ชนิด ๑๐ สตางค์ และ ๔.ชนิด ๒๐ สตางค์ เรียกกันในยุคนั้นว่า “เบี้ยสตางค์ทองขาว” นำประกาศออกใช้เมื่อวันที่ ๒๑ สิงหาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๔๑ ควบคู่ไปพร้อมกับเงินพดด้วง และเหรียญกษาปณ์ระบบแบบเก่า เหรียญเบี้ยสตางค์รุ่นนี้ ด้านหน้าเป็นรูปช้างสามเศียร มีอักษรล้อมรอบด้านบนว่า “สยามอาณาจักร” ด้านล่างระบุปี ร.ศ.๑๑๖ ด้านหลังมีตัวเลขไทย ระบุชนิดราคาของเหรียญ พร้อมกับตัวอักษรชนิดราคาของเหรียญ นักสะสมนิยมเรียกว่ารุ่น “สยามอาณาจักร” คำว่า สตางค์ มีความหมายว่า ส่วนของร้อย นับแต่วันนั้นมาประเทศสยามจึงมีหน่วยเงินหลักคือ บาท และหน่วยย่อย คือสตางค์

           แต่เนื่องจากคนในยุคนั้นยังสับสนไม่คุ้นเคยกับหน่วยเงินตราแบบใหม่ จากเดิมที่ใช้โสฬส, อัฐ, เสี้ยว, ซีก, เฟื้อง, สลึง, บาท, ตำลึง และชั่ง ประกอบกับการแตกเงินปลีกตามระบบใหม่เทียบกับหน่วยเงินตราเดิมไม่ลงตัว เป็นเหตุทำให้ประชาชนไม่นิยม ทางการจึงเปลี่ยนมาทำเหรียญปลีกที่ประชาชนต้องใช้บ่อยๆ ในชีวิตประจำวัน เป็นเนื้อทองแดง และทองขาว (นิเกิ้ล) มี ๓ ชนิดราคาคือ ๑ สตางค์, ๕ สตางค์ และ ๑๐ สตางค์ และจนในปี ๒๔๔๗ จึงมีประกาศยกเลิกการใช้เงินพดด้วงในการชำระหนี้โดยสิ้นเชิง

           เหรียญเบี้ยสตางค์ทองขาวรุ่นนี้จึงเป็นเหรียญเงินปลีก หน่วยสตางค์ รุ่นแรกและรุ่นเดียวที่ใช้ตราช้างสามเศียรบนหน้าเหรียญ เป็นเหรียญที่เป็นหลักฐานจุดเปลี่ยนของระบบบัญชีของไทยที่จะได้ใช้จุดทศนิยมได้ เช่นเดียวกับอารยประเทศอื่นๆ นับเป็นพระปรีชาสามารถของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทยที่อยู่เคียงคู่ดูแลทุกข์สุขของพสกนิกรตลอดมา
