ตามประวัติของพญาเต่าเรือน เป็นอดีตชาติของพระพุทธเจ้า เมื่อครั้งเสวยพระชาติเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ พญาเต่าเรือน พญาเต่าเรือน หมายถึงขนาดใหญ่โตเท่าบ้านเรือนอาศัยอยู่บนเกาะร้างกลางมหาสมุทร ในครั้งนั้นมีเรือสำเภาใหญ่ของพ่อค้าวาณิชได้อับปางลงกลางมหาสมุทร ผู้คนพากันหนีตายขึ้นไปอาศัยอยู่บนเกาะร้างแห่งนั้น ต่อมาเกิดความหิวโหย ไม่มีอาหาร ถึงขนาดบ้าคลั่งต้องฆ่าฟันกันเองเพื่อเอาเนื้อมาบริโภคเป็นอาหาร พระโพธิสัตว์ พญาเต่าเรือน เห็นเหตุการณ์โดยตลอด ด้วยความสงสารจึงได้บำเพ็ญทานบารมีและเมตตาบารมีถึงขั้นสูงสุด คือ ปรมัตถบารมี ช่วยเหลือมนุษย์ให้มีชีวิตรอดอยู่ต่อไปโดยไม่ต้องฆ่าฟันกันเอง
