Origin: Lopburi Temple District, North Central Thailand.

Period:18/19th century.

Composition: Bronze, hand-tooled copper/tin alloy with aged patina.

An extremely rare and exquisite 18th to 19th century example of a Bronze Seated Crowned Buddha, with Khmer influence, recovered from an old temple in the Lopburi province of north central Thailand. The piece is well modeled in traditional Khmer style, profusely adorned in Royal attire, adorned by jeweled ornamentation throughout.

A sublime Buddha portrayed seated in meditation in the 'Virasana' pose, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands display the 'Dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual perfection, gesture, with both hands overlapping one another and open-palms lying upwards. Symmetrically arranged the figure is clothed in regal attire, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment, which covers and is embellished with wire-like jeweled ornamentation of floral patterns.

Typical of Lopburi images with Khmer influence, the face is square, displaying a serene downcast expression, defined by delicately rendered semi-closed eyes. Arched and connected eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth with thick lips, dimpled chin, and elongated earlobes with triangular earring pendants draped to his shoulders. The head is covered in tightly braided hair, bound by an inter-connected diadem, surmounted by a conical-shaped ushnisha, rising to a bulbous ornament finial. The bronze alloy has a dark chocolate brown patina, overlayed with oxidation, and showing minor wear.

Lopburi - Though one of the oldest city in today's north central Thailand, Lopburi was at the time a mid-size provincial town, developed during the 6th to 10th centuries, when it was known as "Lavo". During this period the Lopburi Art was influenced by Pala or Indian style. Between the 10th to 11th centuries Lopburi came under the influence of the Khmer Empire, and thus its culture and art gradually reflected some of Khmer's art style.
